Clarke Historical Library

August 2021

Farewell to Frank Boles

The Clarke Historical Library?s long-time director, Frank Boles, is retiring at the end of August. Frank served as the director of the Clarke for thirty years. His tenure is filled with many accomplishments that have shaped the way the history of Michigan is studied.

During his time, Frank oversaw the library?s addition of many historically valuable collections to the library?s already notable holdings?the Aladdin Kit Home records, materials related to the Hemingways in Michigan, archives of Central Michigan University, and much, much more. Frank also stewarded the library?s microfilming and digitizing programs making the Clarke the nationally recognized hub for historical newspapers in Michigan. Most importantly, Frank cultivated and nurtured relationships across Michigan and beyond. His tireless enthusiasm for history, archives, and special collections has been instrumental in making the Clarke essential in the documentation of Michigan?s history.

New Online

New content and information about the University Communications collection is now available online. University press releases dating back to the 1960's detailing a broad range of topics are available via the Clarke's CMU History digital document archives. In addition to the press releases, the Clarke has created a list of the photographic negatives shot by CMU photographers since the 1940s. The CMU Negative Photo Index is available online and lists the negative numbers and the box where the images can be found. Read more about the CMU Negative Photo Index from a recent blog post.

Remembering John Logie

An old friend of Clarke who recently passed is the subject of a new blog post by Frank Boles. John Logie was an attorney and former Grand Rapids mayor and Clarke board member and an advocate for Michigan history.

Michigan Foodways Exhibit

Ongoing in the Clarke gallery and online is the exhibit highlighting food culture from throughout the state. Featured in the exhibit are books and manuscripts from the Clarke's collection, including cookbooks. Special emphasis is placed on the books by and about Michigan food producers and landmark restaurants.

Fall Semester Starting at CMU

Central Michigan?s University?s fall semester kicks off August 30. The Clarke will be open Monday ? Friday from 9 to 5 throughout the fall semester for research or for viewing the exhibit. This fall, CMU requires everyone to wear a mask in university buildings regardless of vaccination status. And because it will be a busy semester with many courses meeting face-to-face, be sure to plan ahead for parking if you would like to visit the Clarke.
