May 2021

Michigan Foodways Exhibit

The library's gallery space is filled with items from the Clarke collection telling the story of food in Michigan. Ranging from wild rice to modern processed items such as Vernors soda pop, the exhibit also features Clarke's cookbooks of Michigan brands and community heritage. The exhibit can be enjoyed in person (by appointment) and is online as well!

Library Hours

Currently, the Clarke Historical Library is open by appointment only Monday-Friday from 9-5. Beginning July 6, appointments may still be made, but the library will be open to walk-in visitors as well. For further information, please contact clarke@cmich.edu or 989-774-3352.

DigMichNews Update

Work has begun on microfilming and digitizing the winning titles from this year's DigMichNews minigrant competition for preservation microfilming, digitization, and internet hosting of Michigan newspapers. The winners are the Beaver Beacon and the Monroe Evening News. Funding for the award is provided by the Robert and Susan Clarke Endowment with additional funding provided in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library of Michigan.

CMU Homecoming Queens, Kings, and Ambassadors

The Clarke Historical Library website now features dozens of photographs of past Homecoming Queens, Kings, Courts, and Ambassadors. Allow the image carousels to flip through the photos automatically or you can flip through each decade yourself, taking a trip back in time to see images from the 1940s to 2020 on this new page. You can also find a complete list of the names of all the Homecoming Queens, Kings, and Gold Ambassadors from 1946 to 2020.

Congratulations to the Clarke?s Graduating Student Employees

Behind the scenes of the excellent programs and projects the Clarke undertakes are many student assistants who work with us. These students are with us for a short time while they are students, only to leave the Clarke when they finish their degrees. This year, we congratulate two students who graduated in May. Lucy was a student assistant in our reading room for three years and said her favorite place in the library building was anywhere with one of our wonderful exhibits. She will be moving to Saginaw to work with Dorsey School of Business, Inc. Leah worked with the CMU Libraries arts and exhibits program for three years. She often found herself working with the staff in the Clarke because of our wonderful exhibits. She will be moving to Grand Rapids to pursue a job in the arts and culture sector. We will miss the great attitudes and good work these students brought to the job!
