Michigan Foodways Exhibit
The Clarke's latest exhibit about foodways in our state can be enjoyed in person (by appointment) and will soon be online as well. From wild rice?s importance in in the Anishinaabe culture to trademarked brands such as Kellogg's and Faygo, learn about historic and contemporary food culture in Michigan. Featured in the exhibit are books and manuscripts from the Clarke's collection, including cookbooks. Special emphasis is placed on the books by and about Michigan food producers and landmark restaurants.
Hemingway in Michigan Live Streaming Event
WCMU's March Hemingway discussion program is now available for replay on YouTube.
The program features Clarke Director Frank Boles with author and historian Michael Federspiel. Also featured are Lynn Novick, co-director with Ken Burns of the new documentary film about Hemingway, along with producer Sarah Botstein. The Hemingway documentary itself can be steamed at PBS.
DigMichNews Minigrant Winners Announced: Beaver Island and Monroe
Each year the Clarke makes a minigrant award for the digitization and online hosting of local Michigan newspapers. Applications are received from libraries and historical organizations from throughout the state and after finalists are selected, there's a popular vote conducted by tweets and postcards. This year's winners are from Beaver Island (Beaver Island District Library and Beaver Island Historical Society) and Monroe (Monroe County Museum System). Runners up included the Belleville District Library and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saginaw. The winning newspapers will be microfilmed and digitized over the summer. Look for them on our DigMichNews web site later this year! Funding for the award is provided by the Robert and Susan Clarke Endowment with additional funding provided in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library of Michigan.
Justice Elizabeth A. Weaver Papers
Processing of the papers of Justice Weaver is now finished. As a result, the Clarke now makes available
one of the few and likely most complete collections of a Michigan Supreme Court Justice in a Michigan archives. Work began on the papers in 2013. Over time the collection was reduced from 396 boxes (approx. 396 cubic feet) to 144.5 cubic feet in 287 boxes and 11 oversize folders. The encoded finding aid is available online.
Children's Books from Around the World
Each year, the Clarke is delighted to work with volunteer readers to celebrate the library?s extensive collection of international children?s books as well as the rich language diversity found at Central Michigan University. This year, we took the event virtual and our volunteers agreed to create recordings of their readings. Check out the Clarke?s website where you can find over 30 recordings in 15 different languages. Take a few moments on "El d?a de los libros" or Book Day on April 30 and celebrate multicultural children?s books with videos of beautifully illustrated books being read by members of the CMU community!
New Content Available on DigMichNews
New content has been added to the Clarke's DigMichNews online newspaper repository! It includes additions to our Osceola County collection, with a variety of titles and issues ranging from 1905-1924 plus some from the 1970s. Oxford Leader issues from the last five years have also been added. This title holds the distinction of being the longest continuous run in DigMichNews (1898 ? March 2020), and even has the later years in color.
