Speaker Series
The Clarke Historical Library?s Speaker Series will be virtual again for the Spring semester. Join us online Thursdays at 7:00 pm from February 11 to March 11 for a slate of presenters discussing dialects in the Upper Peninsula, the Aladdin Kit Home Company, aquatic invasive species in Michigan, and more. All events require registration, which can be done through the Clarke?s website.
Upcoming Michigan Foodways Exhibit
The Clarke?s next exhibit, opening in March, dives into food and drink and the people of Michigan. To understand history from an alimentary perspective, we are using people?s memories as a jumping off point to explore the significance of Michigan?s food cultures. Be it a significant meal, a traditional family recipe, a favorite snack, a bygone restaurant, or another recollection, these memories can lead us to a better understanding of the history of Anishinaabe peoples, of Michigan?s agricultural production, of beer brewing in Michigan, and much more. To open the exhibit, on March 11 at 7:00 pm, we will be joined for a virtual presentation by award-winning cookbook author, chef, and Michigander Abra Berens. She will discuss how food and drink have shaped her life and career. Please register for this event on the Clarke?s website.
President Boyd Blog Post
At the age of 97, former CMU president Bill Boyd passed away at his home in Racine, Wisconsin on December 16, 2020. He presided over CMU from 1968-1975 and is remembered for improvements to the physical campus as well as for improving lines of communication. Newspaper Digitization Minigrant Application
The application process for the annual minigrant will run from February 1-28. This year the award covers scanning and placing online up to 21,000 pages of a previously microfilmed Michigan newspaper OR
microfilming, scanning, and placing online up to 10,000 pages of a straight run of a Michigan newspaper.
The grant is made possible by the Robert and Susan Clarke Endowment and the Library of Michigan. Complete information is available at the minigrant website.
Archives News
Due to a change in CMU policy, the link to Archivist Marian Matyn's personal blog Archivist Rising will be removed from the Clarke web site March 1. Followers will still be able to access her blog directly at archivistrising.blogspot.com/
This semester there are two student interns in the archives. Both internships are on a hybrid basis. This is a combination of online work (encoding finding aids) as well as in person experience processing and describing physical collections.
Clarke Hours
