Pop-Up Books Exhibit Receives Finishing Touches
After delays caused by the public health emergency, the March installation of our current exhibition, The Surprise and Wonder of Pop-Up Books, has just this month received the finishing touches. This semester the Clarke Historical Library, including the exhibition galleries, is open by appointment only. Appointments may be made by phoning 989-774-3352 or emailing clarke@cmich.edu in advance. The King of Beaver Island
The new biography of James Jesse Strang (1813-1856), self-proclaimed King of an ecclesiastic monarchy on Beaver Island, makes a special call out to Clarke reference librarian John Fierst for the research assistance he provided. The King of Confidence: A Tale of Utopian Dreamers, Frontier Schemers, True Believers, False Prophets, and the Murder of an American Monarch was written by internationally bestselling author Miles Harvey and published by Little, Brown and Company. Harvey is presenting an online author talk at 7pm on November 5 as part of the Clarke Speaker Series. The Clarke's collection includes material related to the Strangite faction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that made Beaver Island, Michigan their home in the mid-nineteenth century. This collection includes an original daguerreotype of James Jesse Strange, one of few known photographs of him.
Archive Interns
This summer the Clarke had its first online interns. Students Katie Higley and Rachael Kaiser encoded large, complex finding aids for the C.S. Bliss and Channel 9 & 10 News film collections, under the direction of Clarke archivist Marian Matyn.
Library Hours
Clarke continues to be open to researchers and exhibit gallery visitors by appointment only through the fall semester. Appointments can be made by phoning 989-774-3352 or emailing clarke@cmich.edu in advance. Our regular hours are Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on Saturday, September 19 and Saturday, October 17 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
