NSF Grant Awarded to Museum

Lizard in a jar with fluids. Thanks to a recent $128,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, a large segment of the Museum?s Biological collections will be further protected against dangerous fumes and off-gassing, made more accessible to researchers and instructors, and securely stored for future generations. The Herpetology and Ichthyology specimens in the Museum?s collection that are stored in 70% ethanol have, until now, been housed in an area not rated for that type of storage. The grant allows for the purchase of twenty flammable storage cabinets that will be placed in controlled areas within the Biosciences Building and Brooks Hall to disperse the flammable load of the collection. This ?dispersed? collection will allow museum staff to safely manage these specimens in accordance with best practices protocol, and cut down significantly on the need to transport the specimens across campus in order to make them available for instructors and researchers. Dr. Kirsten Nicholson, former Curator of Natural History, and MCNH Collections Manager Ron Bloomfield received the grant this year with plans to have the project completed by the end of August, 2020.

Michigan History Day

Michigan History Day logo. We are pleased to announce that the CMU Museum, Museum Studies Program, and Department of History are partnering with the Historical Society of Michigan to host both the District 5 (March 21, 2020) and State (April 25, 2020) History Day competitions on CMU?s Campus. History Day engages students in the 4th through 12th grades in research projects that help them learn to use both primary and secondary sources. The resulting projects are judged and awards given. Those that win at both the regional and state level have the opportunity to go on to the national competition. The 2019-20 theme is ?Breaking Barriers in History.? For more information about how you or your child can get involved in Michigan History Day, visit hsmichigan.org/mhd/.
