Grandparents U

Grandparents U Schoolhouse Each June the Museum Education team, led by Caity Burnell, hosts presentations for Grandparents U, a summer camp that brings generations together for three days of fun on CMU's campus. This year one of the Museum's presentations was at the Bohannon Schoolhouse where participants experienced a typical school day in 1901. They played vintage games and wrote in cursive on slate boards (pictured here). Caity says, "This is one of our favorite groups of the year--they're so enthusiastic!" ACS Award: Jay Martin

Jay C Martin Museum Director Jay C. Martin received a Salute to Excellence Award from the Midland Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The ACS newsletter stated the award was, "In recognition of his expert guidance and enthusiastic support of the Section's centennial historical exhibit. For providing consultation, student supervision, assistance with oral histories and overall perspective during three years of exhibit planning, you have earned our greatest respect and sincere appreciation." Way to go, Dr. Martin!

Where are they now? Gary Skory (1978)

Gary Skory After more than three decades leading the Midland County Historical Society, Director Gary Skory announced his retirement in June. A 1978 graduate of Central Michigan University's Museum Studies Program, Skory joined the Historical Society in 1988 as the project manager for the Herbert H. Dow Historical Museum, and was named director in 1990. In addition to maintaining a vigorous public speaking schedule, he was involved in the planning and construction of the Herbert D. Doan Midland County History Center, established an online archive of Midland County historical documents, making research sources available to people far and wide, curated exhibitions of interest to local history enthusiasts such as "VOICES: Extraordinary Women of Midland County" in 2011, created popular historical tours of the Midland Cemetery; programmed the Heritage Series of informational lectures covering topics from the Chemical Bank robbery of 1937 to the Dionne Quintuplets of Canada, and created a vibrant educational program at Heritage Park that welcomes hundreds of students each year to learn about the history of our region. We extend our best wishes to Gary as he begins another chapter pursuing existing and new adventures: "more walks along the Lake Michigan shoreline, more focused writing, more old house restoration work on the Endless Project and my Midland home, more coffee, traveling, sugarhouse/syruping expansion...and some new plans and opportunities, too."
