Museum Exhibit

Dizzy with Excitement!

VW Bus in 1969 daisy print About mid-semester there is usually "slog" felt by students, faculty, and staff, pressured by the overwhelming busy-ness and deadlines. This year is different. We are, literally, constructing creativity by building the Kozmic Clash exhibit. Many volunteers and staff are fully involved and we are expanding construction on a daily basis. Kozmic Clash opens April 22, 2019, at 4:00pm. We hope you'll join us then for the grand reveal!

Movie Night at the Museum

Movie Poster Join the MST Club for a free showing of At War with the Army, a comedy about World War II. This ridiculously goofy movie is the first collaboration between Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Jerry stars as a hapless private and Dean stars as the bossy First Sergeant at a stateside training base. Grab a blanket or cushion and settle in on Thursday, April 18, at 6:00pm, at the Museum of Cultural and Natural History's Main Gallery (Rowe Hall Room 124). Individuals who donate a minimum of 25? will receive unlimited popcorn. Your donations will help continue the MST Club's efforts to provide support to the next generation of museum professionals.

Founders Day/Isabella County Historical Society

Olivia Beebe Spreading out Quilt The 2019 Isabella County Historical Society (ICHS) Founders Day event was a great success, due in no small part to the help of students from CMU?s Museum Studies and Cultural Resource Management Programs. Despite the ice, the event was well attended.

The April 2, 2019, meeting of ICHS will include a discussion with potential partners about setting a new date and vision for the annual Founders Day event. Representatives of historical groups in Isabella County are welcome to attend the meeting at 7:00 pm in the MCNH Rowe Hall Lobby. Parking after 4:00 pm is free in Lot #14, directly adjacent to Rowe Hall.

American Chemical Society Midland Section Centennial Exhibit

ACS Meeting at table The American Chemical Society (ACS) Midland Section Centennial exhibit is coming along nicely. A full draft of the labels has been completed and we are nearing the point where they can be printed. Artifact labels for two chemistry sets and an RCA electron microscope from the CMU Museum's collections are also nearly complete. Come to the CMU Museum hallway before the end of the day tomorrow, Wednesday, March 20 to get a sneak peek at a Periodic Table of important members of the Midland ACS, which will be displayed in the exhibit at the Doan History Center in Midland. The exhibit opens in early May.

Why don't you notify donors when their donations are on exhibit?

The largest part of a museum is the Collections. Think of collections like an iceberg--the tip of the iceberg, what you see, is the smallest part. The largest part is unseen. CMU's Museum has over 72,000 items in its collections. We are often asked why we have not contacted people who donate items that are put on display in exhibits. There are many reasons, but the most common one is that there are just too many items that are moving back and forth and on display at any one time. Additionally, the donor may have moved, or is otherwise unable to be contacted. Please remember we greatly appreciate your donation, even if we are unable to place it in an exhibit.

MST 310 In Action

MST 310 Students in Main Gallery Doing Project Students in Caity Burnell?s MST 310: Introduction to Museums class are learning exhibit prototyping this semester. They worked in groups to test sections of the new music hands-on exhibit and provided valuable feedback. Throughout the rest of the semester they will be working together to develop activities to go along with the new exhibits.

MST 315 in Action

Abbie Diaz Speaking in Gallery On March 13, Abigail D?az, Educator at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and Museum Studies Alumnus, joined the Museum Studies 315 class: Museums, Stakeholders and Communities along with members of the Museum Studies Club to discuss accessibility in museums. The class learned about ADA requirements and universal design and then practiced applying these concepts in a variety of scenarios. The group conducted an accessibility audit of the museum gallery. Thanks Abbie, and Daniel, for sharing these important skills with MST students!
