Museum Exhibit

Museum Closed December 22-January 1, 2019

Closed The CMU Museum is closed December 22 through January 1 as employees celebrate holidays with their families. May you and your family enjoy the blessings of the holiday season! The Museum re-opens for regular business hours on Tuesday, January 2, 2019, at 8:00am. The Hands-On Gallery remains closed as we install our new exhibit.

Fall Intern: Tyjuan Swain

Swain Museum Studies intern Tyjuan Swain worked at the Clarke Historical Library with Archivist Marian Matyn. While there he processed, photocopied, and encoded three collections. Processing allows the archival collections to be used by researchers by eliminating miscellaneous materials. Photocopies were created from acidic materials in order to preserve the information in the historic documents. Encoding of the collections made information available to researchers in real-time from the Clarke's website. The three collections included the Eva Langworthy Dutcher Collection, Isabella Child Development Collection, and the CMU Athletics Collection. Good job Tyjuan!

She also participated in volunteer training, exhibit design, social media, curation, and photography. She loves interacting with school groups and teaching Museum programs including "Backyard Birding," "Michigan through the Ages," and "Bug Out!" She is most thankful for gaining so much hands-on experience in a museum. Great going Lauren!

Where are they Now? Jenny Chisnell (2007)

Jenny Chisnell Over a decade after graduating, Jenny Chisnell regularly references concepts learned in her Museum Studies courses ranging from textiles to taxidermy. Jenny says, ?Combined with my English degree, and subsequently augmented by a Masters' in Library Science, my MST work skillfully prepared me for a successful career as a Rare Books Librarian, employed by world class institutions like the Brooklyn Museum of Art.? Jenny has worked for nearly two years at the New York Public Library. Working there was her childhood dream job and Jenny says, ?Nearly two years in, I still wake up excited to go to work in the morning. And I have CMU's Museum Studies Program to thank for ultimately leading me to the career bliss I am humbled to possess today. Museum Studies at Central Michigan University was the best part of my undergraduate education.?

MST Alumni Survey to be Distributed In February

Survey Icon A survey of Museum Studies minor (MST) alumni will be distributed in February of 2019. The MST staff will be taking the recommendations from this survey into consideration as the program continues to advance in accordance with industry standards. If you are an alumnus and receive an email from Dr. Martin, please take ten minutes to fill it out online. This helps the MST program (and CMU) save time and money, and it also saves a few trees.
