?Kozmic Clash: Peace, Love and Outer Space?

Kozmic Clash In late Spring 2019 the Museum will open a new special exhibit entitled ?Kozmic Clash: Peace, Love and Outer Space.? The exhibit will focus on several major events of 1969, emphasizing the dynamic expression of freedom through creativity, innovation, exploration, and group participation in music, the arts, and technological advance. The Woodstock Festival (officially ?An Aquarian Exposition: Three Days of Peace and Music?) and the first man on the moon (the Apollo 11 mission) will be used to illustrate the key achievements that occurred on both the ?hippie? and the conservative home fronts in 1969. The exhibit will be located in the Rowe first floor Museum Hall, Hands-On Gallery, Lobby, and Main Gallery.

Schoolhouse Gets Routine Repairs and a New Coat of Paint

Schoolhouse Painting CMU has so many great craftsmen in Facilities Management that those of us on campus who routinely need their services expect excellence every day. Rarely do we recognize the members of our CMU family who work behind the scenes to provide seamless services to our students, visitors, and the general public. Occasionally we get a chance to acknowledge their hard work publicly, and we're doing so now. Pictured here are Marc Robinson (above) and (L to R) Josh Bryant and Jeff Cain as they make routine repairs and prepare to repaint the Bohannon Schoolhouse/Gerald L. Poor Museum. Many thanks to all our Facilities folks for their care in preserving this 117 year old icon of CMU?s campus!

MST 325 in Action

MST at CNC Students in MST 325, Public Programming in Museums, visited the Chippewa Nature Center (CNC) in Midland on September 26 for a program with Executive Director Dennis Pilaski and Director of Education Jenn Kirts about CNC?s interpretation methods, play-based learning in their Nature Preschool, and much more. Dennis and Jenn are both CMU alumni! For more information about CNC?s diverse program options, visit www.chippewanaturecenter.org.

Students Learn Conservation

Cupola Conservation The students of Dr. Jay Martin's class (HST 580: Public History) worked under the direction of Sherry and George Sponseller of the CMU Museum's partner, the Isabella County Historical Society (ICHS), to clean up the interior of the 1876 Isabella County Court House cupola. Students learned about the basics of Historic Preservation. Thanks George and Sherry! Good job gang! MST Club Serves at Fort Fright

MST Fort Fright The Museum Studies Club participated in Fort Fright, the last event of the year at Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City. Fort Fright is an 18th century fort and fur trading village overrun by werewolves, witches, goblins and ghouls. Reports are that Club members are very good at scaring people, as this has turned into an annual event. Volunteers stayed in the archaeology tunnel within the fort for two nights. During the day Saturday they were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the entire State Park collections, including a trip to Mackinac Island! The experience was great and they expect to scare folks again next year. For more information on the MST Club, contact mst.club.cmu@gmail.com.

CRM Society meets every other Thursday

CRM Society The Cultural Resource Management Graduate Society has officially been reinstated as a registered student organization! Bi-weekly meetings are held Thursdays at 5pm in Rowe Hall Room 212 for all students interested in CRM or wishing to learn more about the program. The next meeting is October 25. For more information, visit www.crmsociety.weebly.com to learn more or to contact one of the exeuctive board members.

MST Intern Award

Intern Award Museum Studies students frequently work multiple jobs to afford to complete their college education. With funds thinly spread, the expenses of travel and temporary relocation to another community to complete an internship is challenging. Please contribute to the Museum Internship Award, which helps our students afford to accept internships at the best museums in the world. To give to this important award, go to https://donate.cmich.edu/campaigns/museum-internship-award.

Natural History Fluids Rehousing Project Update

Fluids Flammables Cabinets Museum undergraduate student assistants have made great strides in rehousing the fluids collections and are nearing completion for rehousing the Ichthyological (fish) Teaching Collection formerly located in Brooks Hall. Both the Herpetological and Ichthyological Teaching Collections are now housed in flammables cabinets in one lab room within the Biosciences building where there are snorkel vents to draw off fumes while students are examining the specimens as part of course/lab work. This creates a safe educational environment while securing the collections. This project has been a great cooperative effort, with the College of Science and Engineering providing new cabinets, while supplies and additional equipment have been jointly funded by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and the Department of Biology (an academic unit of the College of Science and Engineering). The wages that fund participation of our student assistants in this hands-on learning experience are funded by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences through the Museum and the Museum Studies Program. Finishing rehousing the fluids collections currently stored in Rowe Hall is next on the agenda.
