MST Alumnus Abbie Diaz: One of CMU?s 10 Within 10

Abbie Diaz Abbie Diaz, a 2014 graduate with a major in History and Anthropology and a minor in Museum Studies, was recognized by CMU's Alumni Association last week at the "10 Within 10" ceremony. This award recognizes ABbie as a young alumnus who has brought honor to CMU through her work in her career/community. To those graduating soon, Abbie says, ?Be a ?yes? person. Take every single job, every opportunity, every connection you can. I said yes to new jobs, responsibilities and challenges and also to late nights, long commutes and changing uniforms in Ubers in between jobs. It has all been worth it." Abbie recently left Chicago?s Museum of Science and Industry (to be Director of Education at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum) where she learned about radical empathy. She says, ?This job and this workplace have exposed me to such diversity, and I think of the museum as a microcosm. I truly believe that the way we move forward and get better is to practice radical empathy.? Staff Excellence Award Recipient Sarah Avery

Staff Excellence Museum and Museum Studies Program Executive Secretary, Sarah Avery, received the Staff Excellence Award for 2017-2018. Sarah says she likes working in the Museum because each day is completely different. She also says, "The other great thing about working here is that my co-workers are exemplary CMU employees. They set (and meet) high performance goals, spend a great deal of time mentoring Museum Studies students, and ensure student success through continuously improved processes and procedures. An added bonus is that they all have a great sense of humor!"

Garden Club Volunteers at Bohannon Schoolhouse

Deromedis Among the least known supporters of the Museum are the members of the Mt. Pleasant Garden Club. The Club took on beautification of the Bohannon Schoolhouse property as a Bicentennial Project in 1976, and they have maintained this commitment now for over forty years! This dedication is recognized on a plaque on the large rock set among beautiful flowers. Here we have included an image of Marilyn and Herb Deromedi (retired CMU football coach and Director of Athletics), who are among the most faithful of those cultivating our curb appeal. Many thanks to all for making the southwest corner of Preston Street and West Campus Drive one of the most picturesque on campus.

MST Student Josh Simon Presents at Costume Society Symposium

Josh Simon Museum Assistant Joshua Simon attended Costume Society of America's Midwest Regional Symposium in September. He presented his paper entitled "The 'Best Dressed Women in the World Today,'" at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. The presentation focused on how gender impacted the experience of service members (as examined through a historic dress lens) enlisted in the World War II-era U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve. His research is based upon three uniforms in MCNH's collection, which Joshua discussed in the presentation. Joshua also gave another presentation regarding his summer internship experience at the Symposium. Read Joshua's article regarding the uniforms in MCNH's collections and the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve at costumesocietyamerica.com/collectionscornercmu/.
