Fall Speaker Series
The speaker series gets underway October 2 with Dr. Amy Ransom, CMU Professor of French discussing Michigan's French community of the first half of the 19th century. The following week on October 9, Clarke Reference Librarian John Fierst shares insights on Tocqueville's Two Weeks in the Wilderness, the new exhibit he curated. On October 17, the Clarke hosts author Stacy Daniels, presenting The Comedy of Crystal Lake about the Benzie County lake and the history of its ill-fated Lake Michigan canal. November 7 brings a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the armistice ending World War I. Wrapping up the series on November 27 is Grace Lin, an award-winning and New York Times bestselling author/illustrator of children's books. She'll speak about her path to publication and how she learned to embrace the multicultural adjective. All talks take place in the Sarah and Daniel Opperman Auditorium of Park Library and are followed by a reception at Clarke.
NDNP Grant Awarded
Clarke Historical Library has been awarded a $285,000 National Endowment for the Humanities grant. The grant continues funding for Clarke's participation in the National Digital Newspaper Program. Approximately 90,000 newspaper pages telling the story of the Arsenal of Democracy during World War II will be scanned for upload into the Library of Congress's
Chronicling America web site. The newspapers document tremendous social changes taking place in Detroit and southeastern Michigan during the war years. Key newspapers to be digitized for these years include the Detroit Times, Michigan Chronicle, Automotive News, and the Hamtramck Citizen and others.
Clarke Director Featured in Radio and Social Media Interviews
The commentary of Frank Boles was featured in a Michigan Radio news piece about our state's first newspaper, The Michigan Essay, published in 1809. The audio interview can be accessed from the Michigan Radio web site. Frank was also interviewed this summer about Michigan lighthouses by Central Michigan University for their Facebook page.
Student Assistant News
Archivist Marian Matyn's intern Nikki Brabaw recently posted a blog about her experience at the Clarke Historical Library. Reading Room student assistant Victoria Spencer was recognized as a
multicultural role model for her work mentoring college bound high school students in CMU's Trio Detroit program.
Digitization student assistant and geology major Sam Tibebe authored a blog posting about the impact of Douglass Houghton on Michigan. The post is illustrated with original maps and notes from the Clarke's collection.
Fall Hours
Regular library hours are Monday ? Friday from 9-5. Additionally, the Clarke will be open 9-noon on Saturdays from October 6 ? November 17.
