Fluids Collection Upgrade Resumes

Piper and Ty After a hiatus to take advantage of the opportunity to move natural history collections into Brooks Hall, the fluids collections rehousing project has resumed! This project involves upgrading fluids storage equipment to new jars and lids that are the industry-standard to prevent off-gassing (the release of alcohol and formalin fumes leading to safety issues and the drying out of our specimens). Taking the lead on this project are the newest Museum Assistants, undergraduate freshmen Piper Mophett and Tyler Tobias, who have been blazing through this project. The reptiles and amphibians are nearly done, so they are primarily rehousing fish specimens. This work will continue through the summer.

Curious Curators Revealed!

Curious Curator Logo The 2018 Curious Curators are: Madeline Buckley (Mount Pleasant Public Schools), Bryn Gilde (Beal City Public Schools), Maria Ivantiskaya (Renaissance Academy), Cadence McPeak (Midland Public Schools), Amelia Russell (Mount Pleasant Public Schools), and Piyush Saraiya (Mount Pleasant Public Schools). These young people all completed the application form and wrote an essay indicating why they should be chosen as a Curious Curator. They get to spend a day with museum staff creating an exhibit, going behind-the-scenes in collections, and visiting the 1901 schoolhouse. Look for a photo album on our Facebook page June 27, keyword "CMUMuseum". Thanks to the John R. and Constance M. Harkins Community Fund of the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation for supporting this program.

Meet Piper & Ty

Ty & Piper Our newest Museum Assistants, Tyler Tobias and Piper Mophett, come to us from Mississippi. Some of Ty's main interests are Zoology and Ecology, specifically in Herpetology, and he is double majoring in Biology (Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation) and English Language and Literature (Creative Writing), with a minor in Museum Studies and possibly Philosophy. Ty recently received the Junior Herpetologist Award from the International Herpetological Symposium. Piper is double majoring in Biology (Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation) and Studio Art, with a minor in Museum Studies. Piper received a scholarship from the CMU Biology department, and she has stated that her artistic inspiration often comes from the mundane, nature, and her animals. Both Piper and Ty participated on their high school Science Olympiad team, which progressed to the National tournament two years in a row, with Piper as the captain in 2018. Welcome to the Museum team!

Where are they now?  Brett Alger (2003)

Brett Alger Brett Alger majored in Biology and minored in Museum Studies at CMU. While attending CMU he usually worked two part-time jobs, and he says, ?I learned the value of a good education, and discovered that meeting people and developing relationships in life is just as important as facts from a text book.? He now works at the National Marine Fisheries, Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office, in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He looks back on his time at CMU fondly, and says it was a place ?. . .that gave me tools to be successful in raising a family.?
