MST/CRM Students Help Save Time [Capsule]

Time Capsule Conservation Recently, a group of Museum Studies students (in lab coats left-right) including Courtney Riggs, Joanna Lincoln, and Ashley Blackburn, along with Graduate Assistant Mitchell Bryan (CRM), traveled to the Bay County Historical Society/Museum in Bay City to work on salvaging water damaged items found in the John F. Kennedy Peace Capsule exhumed in 2015. The items have been kept in frozen storage until salvage work can be completed, which is an ongoing research project of MST program instructor Ron Bloomfield (far right). The group worked alongside Bay County Historical Society staff members Emily Radlinski (Collections Manager-far left) and Corrine Bloomfield (Senior Curator-2nd from left), both CMU MST program Alumni. Students spent their time separating documents, photographing, documenting, and learning about the issues with mitigation and salvage of waterlogged documents. Many of these documents are hand-written letters to the ?future? and document life in 1965 when the capsule was buried. Ron Bloomfield will be presenting a program on the time capsule and his findings (so far) to the Bay County Historical Society at 1:00pm on May 12. More information at www.bchsmuseum.org/id54.html.

Fashion Merchandising & Design Class

FMD Class Fashion Merchandising & Design students in History of Western Dress visited the Museum classroom at the end of April to observe late 19th and 20th century garments and accessories from the Museum's clothing collection. Students were required to sketch two garments and create a catalog description for each garment, noting the style and date, design features like collar style and length, and fabrication information. "For some students, this is the first time they have seen historic garments in person," Lecturer Jennifer Mower commented, "which is exciting and why this is becoming one of my favorite days in the semester."

Meet our newest Museum Assistant: David Zinger

David Zinger David Zinger, History major (European history from 1914 to 1945), and Museum Studies minor, is one of our newest Museum Assistants. He comes to us with a year of experience volunteering at the Museum, so he may be familiar to some. His primary responsibility is assisting with educational programming, but as with all our Museum Assistants, he will be cross trained in collections, exhibits, and other museum skills. David loves spending time with family, running, playing catch, and being outdoors fishing or hiking. He is also a big fan of Detroit sports teams.

Where are they now?  Dan Erickson (1987)

Dan Erickson Dan Erickson's graduate student work from CMU helped him get a job immediately upon graduation at Chase Studio in Cedar Creek, Missouri. Chase Studio specializes in exhibits for natural history museums. He collected specimens, did molding and casting, and created finished models and installations. He then became an exhibit preparator at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History, where he worked for 21 years. He also did freelance work for the American Museum of Natural History, making life-size models of prehistoric fish (see photo). Dan now works at the U of M's School of Music, Theatre & Dance, University Productions. He was hired to create stage props and is currently the Properties Carpenter/Artisan. Dan says, "Although I had zero theatrical experience, I have found making stage props and museum exhibits use many of the same skills and materials."

Museum Studies Intern: B. Andrew Smith

B. Andrew Smith During the spring 2018 semester, B. Andrew Smith interned at the Sparta Township Historical Commission in Sparta, Michigan. He assisted with digitizing and inventory of the collections as well as helping with day-to-day operations. He also worked with a local high school?s history club that volunteers with the commission a few days a week, and he assisted visitors with research. Andrew's supervisor was Rachel Williamson, an alumnus of both the MST and CRM Programs.

Kids & Culture: Trail to Michigan

KidsandCulture On one of the nicest Saturdays in a long while, April 21st, "Kids & Culture: Trail to Michigan" was held at the museum. Families learned about some of the ways people migrated to Michigan in the early 1800s through various activities, crafts, and games. They decided as a family what to pack for the journey, explored objects in a homesteader?s cabin, and played vintage games.
