Museum Studies Breaks Record!

MST Program Student taking picture for collctions data base The Museum Studies Program reached a new high for the number of signed minors this fall, breaking a record set in 2012. During program review, students have identified our focus on critical engagement with current issues in the field and hands-on projects as key elements that attracted them to the program. Alumni have mirrored these factors as being critical to their success in the job market and beyond.

Facilities Upgraded

Brooks Hall Natural History Study Museum facilities have been heavily upgraded in 2017. Last spring the Bohannon School House/Gerald Poor Museum received significant upgrades to the interior exhibits. This summer the museum upgraded and moved part of the Natural History Collection into new quarters in Brooks Hall. The collections storage room in Rowe Hall was upgraded this fall. And during winter break the first floor lobby and corridor in Rowe Hall receive a new tiled floor. Come see the improvements when we reopen for the Spring 2018 semester on January 4.

Saving Time: Stabilizing Waterlogged Historical Items

Stabilinzing Waterlogged Historical Items On Saturday, December 2, MCNH Collections Manager Ron Bloomfield presented a workshop on how to process waterlogged materials. The presentation featured examples from Bloomfield?s current research on mitigation tactics for wet/environmentally compromised objects found in time capsules. ?Saving Time: Stabilizing Waterlogged Historical Items" used three real-life scenarios of waterlogged materials to demonstrate the methods used to stabilize these important artifacts of our past. CMU students and Mt. Pleasant community members attended the workshop.

Museum Studies Club Successful Fall Semester

MST Club Volunteering The Museum Studies Club hosted multiple museum professionals in Fall semester. They included Dr. Jay Martin, Director of the Museum of Cultural and Natural History, who spoke about securing strong internships; Wayne Lusardi, the State Underwater Archaeologist, who spoke about shipwrecks; and Karl Mayry, an independent exhibit designer based at the Cranbrook Institute of Science, who spoke about designing the Detroit Zoo penguin exhibit. The Club had one fundraiser at the Riverwood Bowling Alley and volunteered at Fort Fright for the Mackinaw State Historic Parks and at the Mid-Michigan Children?s Museum. If you would like to join the MST Club or present at a meeting, please contact the Club?s president, Ashley Blackburn, at black1al@cmich.edu.

Student Success with Internet Accessible Natural History Collections

Student entering collections online Biology undergraduates working in the Natural History Collections can now view the fruits of their labors?-ONLINE! For nearly two years students have been processing collections information for our Mammal, Amphibian, Reptile, and Fish collections. All of this information is now visible on the web through GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility). Our museum has joined the global movement of making our data accessible online so that anyone, anywhere, with an internet connection can conduct research and engage in educational opportunities, right from their desktop. You can access the collections by going to bit.ly/2zU5HGC and scrolling down the page to the iDigBio link. In addition, our students are gaining valuable hands-on training in these state of the art techniques which will provide them the needed skills to join the next generation of museum professionals. Our students hone their skills and extend their knowledge with real-life experience in our museum, experience they can put on their resum?s that launches their careers.
