Who Is. . .?

Who is always loveable despite being cranky, was born right here in Mount Pleasant, and whose parent shares a birthday with Central Michigan University? To learn the answer, you?ll need to join us as CMU?s Museum of Cultural and Natural History reveals its largest donated artifact ever! You are cordially invited to attend the unveiling at 4:00pm on Monday, September 18, near the gazebo in the Fabiano Botanical Garden (or the UC Rotunda if raining) to find out! This family-friendly event will end with an ice cream social. See you there!

CMU Homecoming October 14 and 15

You are cordially invited to attend Homecoming weekend and tour the Bohannon Schoolhouse/Gerald L. Poor Museum on Saturday, October 14, between 9:00am-Noon and the Museum in Rowe Hall both Saturday and Sunday between 1:00pm-5:00pm. Many new exhibits have been installed this year. We also invite you to tour the downtown Mount Pleasant area where you will find exhibits regarding CMU's 125th anniversary in many storefront windows. The Museum students created these exhibits in conjunction with the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, and the CMU Alumni Association.

MCNH Underwater Archaeology/Research

CMU researchers from the Central Michigan University Cultural Resource Management and Museum Studies Programs, led by Dr. Jay Martin, investigated the wreck of the brig JAMES McBRIDE at Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in late summer. In 1848 the McBRIDE was one of the first American-flag commercial vessels to carry cargo direct from the Great Lakes to the oceanic world. Students work closely with Central Michigan University faculty when they conduct research. They were represented, as were CMU faculty, staff, and volunteers. Great job everyone! For information on CMU applied history, museum, and archaeology programs, email marti6jc@cmich.edu.

Museum Receives Second Free Busing Grant

Thank you to the John R. and Constance M. Harkins Community Fund of the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation for supporting K-12 field trip busing to the Museum for the second year! This, along with past grants from this fund, have drastically increased attendance to the Museum. This attendance not only helps the Pre-K and K-12 system, it also provides many opportunities for student experiences and student success in creating and facilitating educational opportunities. This is one of the many reasons CMU Museum Studies students are employed at such a high rate after graduating. If your local school would like to participate, contact our Museum Educator, Caity Burnell, at sweet2ca@cmich.edu or 989-774-2380.

Bohannon Schoolhouse Narrowly Escapes Permanent Flood Damage

Extensive flooding forced closure of the CMU campus, including the Museum of Cultural and Natural History, June 23-25, 2017. The Bohannon Schoolhouse narrowly escaped permanent damage. Immediate remediation efforts by CMU Facilities and Museum staff prevented permanent damage to the structure, exhibits and artifacts. Funds donated in memory of Marjorie Griffin helped in recovery efforts. Thank you to all who made donations in support of the Gerald L. Poor Museum.
