Jesse Owens Signature Donated to the Clarke

The Clarke Historical Library is the recipient of a CMU-related Jesse Owens signature, donated by former CMU student Jerry Priebe. Jesse Owens was an American track and field athlete, notable for his achievements at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The son of a sharecropper and grandson of a slave brought home 4 gold medals from the games. Owen's signature is on a Central Michigan College 3rd Annual All-Sports Banquet program. The banquet was held May 4, 1955 in the Keeler Union Ballroom of Powers Hall, and Owens was the guest speaker. Jerry Priebe, then a CMU music student providing musical entertainment at the event, got the signature as a thank you after playing Sweet Georgia Brown at Owens' request.

Native Treaties Travelling Exhibition

Treaty of Prarie du Chien (1825) chromolithograph by J.O. Lewis, 1835 The Clarke organized travelling exhibition 'Native Treaties - Shared Rights' will soon wrap up its time at River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe. The show then moves on to a stop at the Ionia County Free Fair, July 13 ? 22. This well-regarded, educational exhibit has toured the state extensively, including stops in the Upper Peninsula. The exhibit centers on how treaties were applied to topics such as land, education, and hunting and fishing rights. It incorporates graphic primary materials into interpretive exhibit panels. Clarke Historical Library has a number of travel ready exhibits. If your organization is interested in hosting a show, please check our web page for available exhibits.
