Clarke Librarian to Speak at River Raisin NBP April 15
John Fierst, Clarke Reference Librarian, will be presenting his research on Lewis Cass to the River Raisin National Battlefield Park. Cass is best known to us as Michigan Territorial Governor from 1813-1831. His other accomplishments included US Senator, Ambassador to France, and cabinet member to Presidents Andrew Jackson and James Buchanan. To learn more about the fascinating life and career of Lewis Cass, join Fierst at the River Raisin NBP in Monroe on April 15 at 2pm for his presentation entitled Lewis Cass and the U.S. Government?s Indian Policies after the War of 1812. Students Gain Practical Experience Processing Manuscript Collections
This semester Clarke Archivist Marian Matyn is supervising the processing work of eight students. After training them and discussing what to do for each project, the students process and rehouse the collection, withdraw peripheral materials, and create a draft finding aid for the remaining contents of the collection. When complete, Marian amends the finding aid, catalogs the collection, and encodes the finding aid to make the contents discoverable by researchers. Read more in the blog posted by Marian.
Recent Programs Hosted by the Clarke Historical Library
The Clarke Speaker Series has been especially active this semester, hosting presentations on a wide variety of topics. In March these covered old Islam in Detroit, African fairy tales, and the commemoration of the US entry into WWI, as well as readings from the Clarke?s collection of international children?s literature. Filming of the Shepherd Argus Newspaper Begins
One of the key programs of the Clarke Historical Library is the preservation microfilming of Michigan newspapers. The publisher of the Shepherd Argus had a fire in 2015, destroying the building and the newspaper back issue files. Since that time, the Shepherd Historical Society has been raising funds for the preservation of the remaining paper newspaper files. The Clarke began filming issues of the Shepherd Argus last month and will focus on the years 1960-2015. The result will be two copies of the microfilm, stored in two separate storage facilities. Researchers can access digital copies online with more issues to be added as the project progresses.
Student Interning at the National Archives
CMU senior Brian Schamber will participate in a summer internship at the National Archives II in College Park, MD. His assignment is in manuscript processing. Schamber?s acceptance into the program was supported by the training he received at the Clarke, under the supervision of archivist Marian Matyn.
Clarke Hours
The Clarke is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm year round, and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm during the spring and fall semesters, for you to view our exhibit or to use our materials for your research. Saturday April 22 is the last open Saturday until fall.
