Clarke Historical Library Year-End Recap
The Clarke wishes you a wonderful end to 2016. This past year has seen a quite a bit at the Clarke including:
- A switch of our digital document repository to the CMU Digital Collections
- The acquisition of four early nineteenth century Native American portraits (Tshusick portrait shown at right)
- The acquisition of four scrapbooks belonging to Marceline Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway?s older sister
- The awarding of a third round of grant funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities to continue our participation in the National Digital Newspaper Program
- The receipt of hundreds of cubic feet worth of CMU University Communications photographs, videos, and news releases
And much more.
We are looking forward to what 2017 holds in store. Next year, we will celebrate Central Michigan University's 125th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of our preservation microfilming operations. We will feature an exhibition of stunning historical and contemporary images of the Soo Locks. We are planning an exciting slate of speakers for the spring and fall. And as always, we will be an outstanding source for information about Michigan history, children?s books, and more.
DigMichNews Grant Finalists Named
The five finalists for this year?s DigMichNews Grant have been named. They are listed below; you can click each finalist to read their application statement:
Through postcard votes (starting January 16) and Twitter votes (starting January 23), the public has the chance to choose the winning community. The winner will see up to 10,000 pages of their local newspapers scanned and uploaded to the Digital Michigan Newspapers website. More details about voting will be in our January newsletter.

Clarke Native Treaties Traveling Exhibit
If you are interested in viewing the Clarke?s traveling Native Treaties exhibit, you only have a few more days to see it at Jackson College in Jackson, Michigan. The exhibit will wrap up December 10.
In January, the exhibit will be on display for an extended time at the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe, Michigan.
The Native Treaties ? Shared Rights exhibit is made possible thanks in part to a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council.
New on the Clarke's Social Media
In November, the Clarke News and Notes blog featured a cornucopia of Thanksgiving-themed postcards. We also announced the start of the Microfilm Project Endowment, an effort to raise funds that will help us support our efforts to document the history of Michigan as found in our newspapers.
Clarke?s social media highlighted many of the great events that happen during November. Take a look at recent posts including a first edition of Andrew Blackbird?s History of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan in recognition of Native American Heritage Month, a postcard of old Tiger Stadium, where the Lions played Thanksgiving football for 36 years, a lenticular (two images in one) Barry Goldwater campaign button from our exhibit that we posted on election day, a postcard especially chosen for the opening day of firearm deer hunting season, and an image of the Student Army Training Corps band for Veteran?s Day (pictured above).

Clarke Hours in December
The Clarke is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm for you to view our exhibit or to use our materials for your research. Our Saturday hours are wrapped up for 2016 and will resume on January 14, 2017.
The Clarke will be closed for Central Michigan University?s holiday recess. Our last day of operations in 2016 will be Thursday, December 22 and we will reopen at 8:00 am on Tuesday, January 3.
