Upcoming Speakers
The Clarke will be hosting one more speaker this spring. Michigan Notable Book Award Winner Rob St. Mary will be speaking to an audience in the Park Library Baber Room on Monday, April 11. St. Mary is the author of The Orbit Magazine Anthology: Re-Entry, a collection of two decades? worth of Detroit?s alternative publishing history into an oversized, heavily illustrated, volume that situates the publications in the city?s pop culture and media history. Orbit, a local journal, was an instantly recognizable arbiter of 1990s Detroit culture. Its irreverent tone and unique editorial features could be traced to two earlier local publications from creator Jerry Peterson ? White Noise (1978?1980) and Fun: The Magazine for Swinging Intellectuals (1986?1990).
We are also pleased to announce two speakers joining us in May and June. On Tuesday, May 17, father and son photographers Todd and Brad Reed will speak about their work capturing the beauty of the state of Michigan in images. Three weeks later, on Wednesday, June 8, we welcome Richard Fleming, author of Wetzel, a historical fiction novel based on Lewis Wetzel?s life as a participant in the wars between Woodland Indian Nations and the frontier settlers of the post-Revolutionary War United States. Both presentations will take place in the Park Library Auditorium.

International Children?s Book Read-In
April is a month to celebrate International Children?s Book Day (April 2) and World Book Day (April 23). In that spirit, the Clarke is hosting an International Children?s Book Read-In on Tuesday, April 19 from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Join us in the Baber Room to listen to eleven Central Michigan University students and faculty, who are native speakers of ten different languages, read books from the Clarke?s international children?s book holdings. Readers will present books in their native languages and then provide the audience with translations in English.
This event is free and open to the public. Stop by and listen to one reader or all eleven!
New Exhibit Now Showing
The Clarke?s most recent exhibit, Native Treaties ? Shared Rights is officially open. Stop by to learn about the history of the treaties signed between Tribal Governments and the United States Government. The treaties are often complex and interpretation can sometimes be challenging. This exhibit, made possible thanks to a grant from the Michigan Humaniteis Council, explores how land, rights, and education came together as indigenous people and the United States Government created the legal understanding that underlies our societies today.
Clarke attending Loleta Fyan SRLC
The Clarke will be at the 2016 Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Libraries Conference held on Mackinac Island May 4-6. Kim from our preservation microfilming and digitization unit will be there as a presenter and to answer questions about our newspaper microfilming and digitization services. If you are attending this year, stop by and say hello.

In the past month, the Clarke News and Notes blog featured posts detailing our acquisition of audio / visual materials from CMU?s Office of University Communications and International Children?s Book Day
We were also busy on Facebook and Twitter. We showed you our first edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as well as Chief Pokagon?s Red Man?s Greeting and Red Man?s Rebuke. We also marked St. Patrick?s Day with a postcard from Michigan?s Emerald Isle, Beaver Island and we posted historic pictures from the CMU campus including the first pow wow in 1989 and the first Gentle Friday in 1967.

Clarke Hours
The Clarke will hold Saturday hours three more times before the end of the spring semester. Stop by on April 9, April 16, or April 23 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm to view or exhibit or use our materials for your research. After April 23, the Clarke will not hold Saturday hours again until September. We will remain open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm throughout the summer to assist you with your research.
