Define Recipients: Send to a Classic LISTSERV List
Or from the job list, select the desired job, then in the job details pane, select the Summary tab and click on the Edit link in the Recipients section.
To access the recipients wizard for a given A/B-split job: On the A/B-Split Job Details page, click the Edit link in the Recipients section.
The Define Recipients wizard allows the defining of recipients that will receive the email message specified in the job when the job is finally sent.
The wizard has five pages: Options, Source, Source Details, Recipients Details, Advanced Settings, and Summary.
The top row of the wizard displays links to these five pages. The page that is currently open is marked with a highlighted background color. Depending on the choices made on some of the wizard pages, other pages may become disabled or may be shown in different versions. If a wizard page is disabled, then it means that this page is not necessary with the current choices and can safely be ignored.
Source Details Page: Topics Filtering or LISTSERV Condition
This screen lets you define additional details for the selected LISTSERV list, depending on the kind of list and the kind of submission that you have chosen on the Source screen.
Standard Submit Options
If the message is sent as a standard list message to list subscribers (see selection on the Source screen), the source details can be used to narrow down the recipients further by employing LISTSERV's capability of list topics (only available if the list actually has topics defined):
- Send only to subscribers with the following topics: With this option, the mailing
will be delivered only to subscribers who have at least one of the selected topics subscribed. The list of
selected topics is displayed (initially as <none>). Click on Select Topics
to define the topics. Each topic is represented with a checkbox. Check the ones desired to select. Use the Select All link to easily mark all topics as checked. The selected topics can
be hidden or exposed in the subject line of the message by selecting the corresponding choice at the bottom of
the dialog box.
If the list subscribers are aware of the topics and are accustomed to using them (for example, they automatically move list messages to folders on their local computers), then consider exposing the topics in the subject line. However, if there are many topics selected for the message, a rather lengthy subject line will result. In this case, consider hiding the topics from the recipients. Hiding topics can also be useful if the topics are only used to subdivide the list and are not directly known or used by the recipients. Click [OK] to submit the choices.
- All subscribers, ignore topics: Use this option with special care because it
overrides the topic settings of the list subscribers and sends the message to all list subscribers, regardless
of their topic selections.
- Send to subscribers with no topics or with the "OTHER" topic: Select this option to send the message to all list subscribers that have selected the OTHER or the ALL list topic, or that did not specify any list topic.
Special Submit Options
If the message is sent as a special submit message (see selection on the Source screen), then you can set a condition as well as additional options in order to select only certain subscribers from the list.
- Condition: Enter a condition (in LISTSERV format, see LISTSERV manual for details)
to filter the recipients of the list. In this condition, additional merge fields can be used that may be
available for your list. For example, if the list contains an additional merge field called CITY, then the mailing could be limited to people from New York by entering the
condition:
&CITY = "New York"
The condition is optional. If no condition is specified, the mailing will go to all subscribers of the list (according to the further options selected, see below).
- Options: Check any additional options desired to use to filter the recipients:
- MAIL: Deliver the message to all normally subscribed subscribers, that is to subscribers who do not have specified DIGEST, INDEX, or NOMAIL.
- DIGEST: Deliver the message to all subscribers who have specified the DIGEST option (note that this mail will not be delivered as a digest itself!).
- INDEX: Deliver the message to all subscribers who have specified the INDEX option (note that this mail will not be delivered as an index mail itself!).
- NOMAIL: Deliver the message to all subscribers who have specified the NOMAIL option (deliver this mail even though the subscriber has opted not to recieve any mails - use with care!).
To determine the actual recipients, the condition is combined with the selected options. Only subscribers who fulfill both the given condition (if any) and at least one of the selected options will receive the mail.
