Subscriber List Definition
-
To access the definition wizard for a subscriber list, open the node of the parent dataset of the desired list in the
Subscriber Datasets
subtree, to show its subnodes.
- For a standard dataset (in subscriber area mode), proceed to open the Lists subnode, to show the subtree with all the lists in the dataset. Select the desired subscriber list node in this subtree.
- For a "single list mode" dataset, there is no such "Lists" subnode. Simply select the node for the single list from the subnodes of the dataset node.
- To create a new subscriber list, select the desired parent dataset in the Subscriber Datasets subtree and select New -> Subscriber List from the menu (or go via the right-click menu of the dataset node in the explorer tree).
- To convert an existing Classic LISTSERV list into an advanced subscriber list in the LISTSERV Maestro Subscriber Warehouse or to create a clone (copy) of an existing Classic LISTSERV list as a new advanced subscriber list in LISTSERV Maestro, select the desired parent dataset in the Subscriber Datasets subtree and select New -> Convert or Clone Classic LISTSERV List from the menu (or go via the right-click menu of the dataset node in the explorer tree).
The Subscriber List wizard lets you define the settings of a subscriber list or edit an existing list.
Note: A subscriber list is only fully editable while it is "empty", meaning that there are no subscribers on the list. For a non-empty list, only certain settings are editable.
The wizard has eight pages:
General, Profile Fields, Profile Field Details, List Type, List Options, Posting Restrictions, Topics, and Summary
The top row of the wizard displays links to these pages. The page that is currently open is marked with a highlighted background color. Depending on the choices made on some of the wizard pages, other pages may become disabled or may be shown in different versions. If a wizard page is disabled, then it means that this page is not necessary with the current choices and can safely be ignored.
The LISTSERV Maestro admin may configure a user account or group so that it is only allowed to create standard announcement subscriber lists, but not advanced subscriber lists. If this is the case, then the wizard has only four pages and the "List Type", "List Options", "Posting Restrictions" and "Topics" pages are not shown.
Summary Page: Settings Overview and Subscriber Area Access
This screen shows an overview of all subscriber list settings and offers several options for defining the access to the subscriber list.
The Public List Access has the following settings:
-
Open to everyone: The page to subscribe to this subscriber list (without first
logging into the subscriber area) will be visible to everyone with access to its URL and everyone will be
able to join the list. Similarly, in the subscriber area, the list will be visible to every dataset subscriber and can
be subscribed by every dataset subscriber.
-
Access for subscribers only: The page to subscribe to this subscriber list
(without first logging into the subscriber area) will not be visible. Similarly, in the subscriber area,
the list will also not be visible to any dataset subscriber who is not already subscribed to the list. Therefore,
existing subscribers (who have been added from inside of LISTSERV Maestro) will be able to see the list in the
subscriber area and thus also be able to adjust their subscription settings. It will not be possible for
any non-subscriber to subscribe to the list, from neither inside of the subscriber area or from the outside.
Note: This also means that if you are a subscriber, you can see the list and have the option of unsubscribing. If you do unsubscribe, you are not a subscriber any longer so you will not be able to resubscribe to the same list. You will have to ask the list owner to add you to the list again from inside of LISTSERV Maestro.
- No public access: The page to subscribe to this subscriber list (without first logging into the subscriber area) will not be visible. Similarly, in the subscriber area, the list will not be visible to anyone, not even to subscribers who are already on the list. This is helpful while still preparing the list for first use or for lists where individual subscribes by users are not desired (where all subscriptions are solely administered from inside of LISTSERV Maestro).
In addition to the access state, it is also possible to temporarily close the subscriber list with the Closed for maintenance option. The access state remains unchanged for lists closed for maintenance, but all the visible access pages show a message that says the page has been temporarily closed for maintenance and to try again later. This is helpful when it is not desirable for subscribers to have access to the list at the same time maintenance is ongoing. Use this option instead of quot;hiding" the list (by setting it to No public access) to avoid confusing subscribers who are used to having access and suddenly not "see" the list anymore.
