Subscriber Dataset Definition
- To access the definition wizard for a dataset, select the desired dataset node in the Subscriber Datasets subtree, then select Edit -> Open Dataset Definition from the menu (or go via the right-click menu of the dataset node in the explorer tree).
- To create a new dataset, select the New -> Subscriber Dataset from the menu (or go via the right-click menu of the "Subscriber Datasets" node in the explorer tree).
The Subscriber Dataset wizard lets you define the settings of a new dataset or edit an existing dataset.
Note: A dataset is only fully editable while it is "empty", meaning that there are no subscribers or any lists in the dataset. For a non-empty dataset, only certain settings are editable.
The wizard has four pages: General, Profile Fields, Profile Field Details, and Summary.
The top row of the wizard displays links to these four pages. The page that is currently open is marked with a highlighted background color. Depending on the choices made on some of the wizard pages, other pages may become disabled or may be shown in different versions. If a wizard page is disabled, then it means that this page is not necessary with the current choices and can safely be ignored.
Summary Page: Settings Overview and Subscriber Area Access
The Public Subscriber Area Access has the following settings:
- Open to everyone: The login page as well as the join page of the dataset's subscriber area (and similarly the subscribe pages of the lists in the dataset) are visible to everyone with access to their URLs. Everyone is able to login (if they already are dataset subscribers) or to join the subscriber area as a new subscriber. Everyone may to subscribe to any of the available lists in the dataset.
- Access for subscribers only: The login page of the dataset's subscriber area is visible to everyone with access to its URL. However, the join page is not visible to anyone (and similarly, none of the subscribe pages for the lists in the dataset are visible). Therefore, existing dataset subscribers (who have been added from inside of LISTSERV Maestro) are able to login to the subscriber area (and from there to subscribe to lists), but it is not possible for a non-dataset-subscriber to join the subscriber area or to subscribe to any of its lists.
- No public access: None of the subscriber area pages are visible to anyone, including the login page, the join page, and the subscribe pages of the lists in the datasets. The dataset (and the lists therein) are "invisible" to the outside as if it did not exist. This state is helpful while still preparing the dataset for first use or for datasets where individual joins or subscribes by outside users are not desired (all subscription is solely administered from inside of LISTSERV Maestro).
In addition to the access state, it is also possible to temporarily close the subscriber list with the Closed for maintenance option. The access state remains unchanged for lists closed for maintenance, but all the visible access pages show a message that says the page has been temporarily closed for maintenance and to try again later. This is helpful when it is not desirable for subscribers to have access to the list at the same time maintenance is ongoing. Use this option instead of quot;hiding" the list (by setting it to No public access) to avoid confusing subscribers who are used to having access and suddenly not "see" the list anymore.
